How to break in your new pair of Doc Martens.

So,  you've got your very own pair of brand new Dr. Martens and are wondering how to break them in without the shedding of your tears. I'll start off by saying that there is no easy way to break in a pair of Doc Marten's because they're so strong, stiff and sturdy all because they're sure to last you a life time. I have put together a list of tips and tricks on how to ease the pain of breaking them in.

1. Understand that before you buy the Doc's, it is going to take a while until you can wear them comfortably.

www.DrMartens.com themselves do reccommend trying the shoes on once you receive them and returning them if they aren't the right fit. With most shoes, ideally you would want about a thumb-sized gap from your toes to the ends of the shoes. With Doc's, however, it's a different story. Because the leather used is so strong they can almost always guarantee blistering so you don't want any space for your feet to move around because that's what causes the friction.

2. How to start the process

Wear the Doc's as often as you can but only for short periods. For example, once you have your Doc's, I would reccommend wearing them around your house all the time. This is good because once your feet begin to feel really sore, you can just take them off and give your feet a rest. You probably all know as well as I do that it isn't that simple when you're out and about.

After a while, start wearing your Doc's out more frequently on short trips to the shops, or if you're going to your friends house and getting the bus, wear them then. Wear them as much as you can until the pain is unbearable. Don't take them off when you start to feel slight pain because that's evolution working it's magic and shaping your Doc's around your feet. Warning: Avoid not having a back-up plan. I would definitely suggest you take out of a pair of spare shoes with you every time you do this because if you don't and have no choice but to stick it out, say hi to your blisters for me.

Tip: Make sure you're bag is big enough to carry your Doc's back home in. Doc's are hefty fuckers.

3. Don't be silly, wrap your.....feet

  • Keep your feet dry, cool and clean.
Blister's develop when the skin is moist. Apply talcum powder all over your feet before putting on your socks.

  • Change your socks twice or more times a day when wearing Doc's.
Steer clear of cotton socks as they will absorb the moisture/sweat which will only make things worse. Wearing thick woolly socks help keep your feet dry and reduce the risk of getting blisters.
  • Wear two or more pairs of socks

Doubling up on socks means that they're is less chance for the Doc's to rub against your feet. Avoid at all times wearing socks with holes in as they provide extra friction

Also, if you aren't used to having shoe with such solid soles, you should think about toughening the skin at the bottom of your feet. You can do this easily by walking bare-foot around your home and garden. Rubbing alcohol has also toughens the soles of your feet.

4. Don't let the thought of the pain stop you from buying a pair. Once broken in, Doc's prove to be insanely comfy and great for concurring the elements.

5. Don't give up. Doc Martens are very expensive so it would be a shame to not be able to wear them without experiencing blisters the size of Guam.

If you don't yet own a pair of Doc Martens and you love the style, I reccommend getting them. Like I mentioned before, they last a life-time and are a great bang for your buck.
